Chapter 11

“What the fuck was that?” I asked as I spun around.

“An EMP,” Chloe said and shook her head.

“An electromagnetic pulse?” I asked.

“Yes. The pirates use them to disable ships before they board them.” The cyborg had stumbled backwards into the captain’s chair but was still upright. A lime green shield danced across her skin before it faded into nothingness, and her pink cybernetic eyes glowed with more energy than usual. The Supreme General huffed and wiped off her outfit like it was suddenly dirty, stood up straight, and then glared at the door as orange and yellow sparks began to come through.

“How are you still awake?” I asked and started toward Ara.

“I have a shield,” she said. “All cyborgs do. That’s why Montelabras hasn’t used an EMP to take us out. You take care of the pirates. I’ll restart Ara and Carina.”

“Will they be okay?” I asked with a worried look at the little robot.

“It wasn’t a strong EMP,” Chloe said with a reassuring smile. “They probably just wanted to knock out your systems, not destroy them. It wouldn’t be as profitable for them to steal a ship that doesn’t work.”

“Right,” I said and let out a relieved sigh, looked at the door, and rolled my shoulders.

The pirates zipped toward our ship on shimmering ropes made of the same material as their sails. A golden tractor beam locked onto us and dragged the galleon closer like we were at sea instead of in the void of space. The robbers thudded against the hull of the ship, and a dull hum filled the cabin before the men started to clomp around the side of the ship toward the door.

“They must have magnetic boots,” Chloe mumbled and shook her head like she was dizzy. “It’ll help them hold on while they break in.”

“We need to get Carina and Ara back up and running,” I said. “We’re sitting ducks right now. I’ll use my shotgun to keep them out for as long as I can, but there might be more on the ship, and we need to be ready for that.”

“I still do not know what a sitting duck is,” she said. “Wait. I do recall hearing it in one of the Earth documentaries, but I’m not sure that your Earth weapon will be of any help.”

“It practically vaporized a guy on the space station,” I said. “Just because it’s not high tech doesn’t mean that it won’t be useful. And the saying, ‘we’re a sitting duck’ just means that we’re not moving and are an open target for anyone who wants to attack us.”

“That makes more sense,” the cyborg said with a glance at my shotgun. “And I suppose you’re right about your weapon. I’ve used a glass cup to knock someone out before.”

The stomping sounds stopped right next to the door, and I pulled out my shotgun. I could take at least one of them out the second that Carina opened the door, and Chloe was right beside me. There
